Hi Everyone! Today, I'm going to be talking about my, "Ocean Meets Volcano", fluid art painting. I first came up with the inspiration for this technique after I got a bit bored of doing regular swipes. In a previous video, I outlined the process of doing a double color swipe, but after that, I wanted to go bigger and better! Which is how I came up with the idea to enhance my painting style with a feather cup pour type of swipe! Something I have never seen done anywhere! It was a bit challenging to do the feather cup.
Essentially, the feather cup is where you pour 2 cups together of 2 different colors, one following the other cup. This gives a feather appearance in the middle. It is a beginner technique that I think I did a very good job on here for it being my first time! I might've rushed it a bit in the end as I was worried about running out of paint. Overall though, I really love the extra mystery doing this technique gained!
The placement of the feather cup pour is at the top of the canvas and a bit slanted. I wanted to do it this way to enhance the contrast of the red. I decided to do my feather cup with white and black because, as this is Ocean meets Volcano themed, the white represents the waves, and the black represents ash.
After my feather cup pour is down, I layered one side with various blue/green colorings and the shorter side with various red/orange colorings. When you are making yours at home it is a good idea to add light colors with darker colors to give your piece extra dimension.
Following the layering of my colors, I grabbed my paper towel pieces and proceeded to pull down the feather pour into the water colors. The feather pour gave a really nice depth as it is 2 colors. Some sides of my paper towel were black, and some were white. After awhile of pulling the feather pour colors through my water colors, I noticed that the swipe colors started to give a really beautiful zebra effect! I swished my paper towel down through the water colors with waves to give it even more of a wavey feel and texture when it dried!
Once I swiped through all of the water colors, I went back over any parts that might have pulled too much of the swipe color to help even the painting out. The red was a lot easier, as there was less to swipe, and I added a bit too much paint. My consistency for this painting was a medium consistency because I was in Michigan for it, with more humid conditions.
Lastly, I torched out some air bubbles, and it was a beautiful work of art! Once of my favorites for sure! Hope you guys enjoyed reading this in depth look at the life of an artist!
