Hi everyone!!
To start this first recorded painting, I am going to use a variety of colors. All of which, are home paints, with the exception of the Color Shifting Lime Green. The Color Shifting Lime Green color I show in my video, will shift colors from yellow to green to kind of a goldy orange when tilted. Which, I also show how to mix the right consistency of color changing paints in my mixing video.
In this video, in order of appearance, I use Tropics Green, Yucatan Blue, Color Shifting Lime Green, Sugar Beet Pink, and Early Spring Green. For my pillow paint, background, I use a deep shade of Dynasty Marquee Purple. Because this is going to be a paper towel swiping technique, my paints, as shown, are a bit thicker than some of my other paintings. This is to allow the swipe technique a chance for a better color contrast and provides better results when the colors mix together in grand beauty.
As I spread my pillow paint, I need to make sure that I am covering all of the sides and corners very well. In the video, you will see me pouring from my 2-liter as this is a home paint mixture. My pillow paint is the same consistency, thicker, as my top colors to ensure the colors that I place on the top, stay on the top. If my pillow paint were a thinner consistency, my thicker paints, would sink underneath the pillow paint. With fluid art, the key is all about gaining the right consistency.
Underneath the painting, I have it propped up with leveled up 2 inch wide cuttings from a mt dew 12 pack. In the beginning of my art, I thought this was a good idea because I got to reuse materials I already had, as start up costs were an issue. After awhile though, I realized that with all of the paint run-off, and with doing 10-12 paintings at once, the paint would destroy the cardboard. For all the work it took to cut them so level, I just decided to use paper cups. Of which I can just buy at my nearest dollar tree 30 for 1 dollar. This is also what I use to prop up my paintings when I dry them all around my home. They come off easily after they dry, cost effective and keep my paintings very level.
Next up, Its time to place the colored paints onto the pillow paint on the canvas. Since I have 2 different shades of green I decide to place the Early Spring Green on the outside edges as the Color Shifting Lime Green is my accent colors. Accent colors always go on the outside as you want them to have the most coverage. They are also, the most expensive colors. You definitely want them to outshine all of the other colors as the main star of the show. Whereas, the other colorings that are created are just the back ups that create the light for the accents.
Now, its time to Swipe! I like to use a good quality brand of paper towel for swipes. Really, I use a variety of tools for different kinds of swiping. But, for this painting, I want to use a high quality brand, cut into tiny 2inch by 2inch, roughly, squares. Cutting them this small allows, within the higher quality allows for greater control of the swipe itself. This painting, I am using a wavey swipey motion with my hand which gives a greater amount of depth and adds an extra layer of beautiful color meshing chaos.
As a last final touch, I do a little bit of torching to allow for air bubbles in the paint to pop and expose the colorings underneath, which also gives it a greater dimension.
And there we have it! The finished product as shown at the end of the production video! This is definitely one of my favorite pieces as I love how the colorings turned out. Check out my original paintings section of this website for possible purchase! Depending on when this is viewed, it may or may not still be available! To whomever receives this beautiful work of art, it is sure to be enjoyed for many years to come!
